Amalfi Coast, Italy

Another sunny but temperate day as we sailed up the Amalfi coast and anchored offshore. The coastline is amazing. Buildings seem to be stuck vertically on the cliffside with no apparent support or way to get to them. This scenario continues up and down the coast for miles. It is stunning to see.

Our ship anchored offshore and we took a tender to the port. Once there we picked up a guide and boarded a ferry that would take us down the coast to the town of Cetara (and then back to Amalfi).  Cetara is quaint. Seems to have one main street up from the dock that is one car wide and used by pedestrian, scooters and autos. There are the usual tourist shops and restaurants. Amalfi is much the same, but larger. Both are crowded with tourists.  The ferry boat back to Amalfi, sitting outside on the upper deck, was quite soothing.

It seems this part of the coastline is known for lemons and there are a variety of items that are lemon based. Foremost is limoncello, a lemon liqueur, but there is an abundance of lemon sorbet, soaps, lotions, etc.

Our guide did walk us through the back alleys of  Amalfi, which still had some restaurants along with residences. Once we wound our way back to the main thoroughfare we joined the mass of people. A tender back to the ship brought a degree of comfort.

The Amalfi coastline, with buildings up and down the mountainside down to the sea.

Notice the artistic bench.  There is a collection of them along the harbor in Cetara.

“Downtown” Cetara, or the city plaza.

Charming balconies and a good place to dry your laundry.

Every town has one, even more than one.  A church of course.

A sample of lemon items.

On the wall is an Italian flag colors hanging of red peppers, green basil and white garlic.

One of the many back streets that lead into the main thoroughfare.

The main street in town.  Remember, this one road is used by people, scooters and automobiles.
